Merry Christmas

Christmas Messages from Taita Cricket (Dave Gillespie and Mark Houghton)

I would like to wish all members a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2016. Enjoy your time with family and friends and return to the cricket field or the balcony supporting our teams refreshed in January.

I would like to congratulate all players for their efforts during the first half of the season, with 3 two day teams, 6 T20 teams and 2 junior teams the club is in good heart.

It has been a challenging first half of the season for our Premier's with the one day campaign not going to plan, 3 wins from 10 games have left us in 7th spot and only an outside chance of making the top six. We need to beat Onslow with a bonus point on the first game back post-Christmas on the 9th of January at home and trust that both Upper Hutt and University beat Karori and Hutt Districts respectively. But "The Fat Lady has not sung yet"

This team certainly has talent, despite the loss of a number of experienced players and they all know they are good enough to bounce back.

One thing all supporters can do to assist our rebound is to come down to the park on Saturday afternoons and support the team. I remember when I was playing we got great support from the past players, this certainly lifted the team. I would be great if former players and supporters were able to replicate the support we got in the 1980's and 90's and help our premier team bounce back.

We may end up playing in the Hazlett Trophy for the first time since 1998, but with your support we can make this a once only situation.

Let's all get down to FRASER PARK ON THE 9TH OF JANUARY and watch the PREMS take down Onslow

In closing I would like to thank our six Sponsors and Partners for their on-going support. A huge thanks to Al from Petone Radiators, Kevin from Kevin Dee Realty, Nicole from Petone Physio, Trevor from Maidstone Sports, Lizzie from KooGa and Stefan from the Station Village.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Dave Gillespie
President

As captain of the Taita Premier side, I would like to apologise to club members and supporters for the performance of our top side so far this year.

For a club that is known for its tenacity and heart on the field, the premier side has failed to live up to those important terms. Results and performances have at times been unacceptable.

A number of our players have been given a rude awakening into the level of commitment and preparation needed to perform at the premier level.

These issues have been addressed, and I'm certain that post-Christmas our results will improve.

Your support is always much appreciated.

Thanks

Mark Houghton

Newsletter

The cricket season is well underway and now that the top teams are back on grass it is starting to feel like the summer is here.

The premier team have had mixed results winning three from six, but Saturday's outstanding performance when we beat Upper Hutt by 8 wickets chasing down their modest score of 144 in 25.5 overs showed the team is back on track. We are currently sitting 4th on the table, victories in the next few weeks against Naenae, Hutt and the Under 19's will define our season and ensure a top six finish which will guarantee is a spot in the Pearce Cup round.

The seconds have had a mixed start but thrashing of Upper Hutt on Saturday by 166 runs should see this team climb quickly up the ladder.

Other key performances include the Legends last over victory over the Squashie's chasing down 186. The women are on a roll, for the first time ever they have had two victories in a row and for the first time they bowled out the opposition, great stuff Carol and the team.

Upcoming Premier games
On the 28th we have the "Battle of the Bridge" when we take on our very close friends Naenae in the Jack Trask Memorial game at Naenae Park. This will be a great opportunity for all Taita supporters to venture over the bridge and provide vocal support to Mark and the guys.

On the 5th of December I will be hosting the 'PAST PLAYERS DAY', when we take on Hutt Districts. If you are only able to get to the club rooms once or twice before Christmas, I encourage you to come down to the clubrooms on the 5th from early afternoon.

"I would like to invite all past players and supporters to our past players day on Saturday the 5th of December, the bar and kitchen will be open all day. This will be a great opportunity for all past players and supporters to mingle for the first time in 2015/16 and support our premier team as we look to beat Hutt Districts
Dave Gillespie- President"

On Sunday the 13th we take on Wellington under 19's at Fraser Park, a great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon having a few quiet beers on the balcony.

The last game before Christmas is against Easts again at Fraser Park.

October Newsletter

Message from the new President

Welcome to the 2015/16 cricket season at Taita Cricket, I feel very honoured to be given the opportunity to be President of our great club at the AGM held in September. I have been around the club scene at Taita for a number of years now undertaking various roles and I am really looking forward to taking on this prestigious position within the club.

I have big shoes to full, taking over from Jakey who did an outstanding job, who along with Goz who is stepping down as Chairman provided great leadership for the club. It is also with great pleasure that the club welcomes Dave Little a "A Taita Legend" to the role as Chairman after a number of years coaching the Premier team.

I would like to welcome players new and returning for the upcoming season. We had some great successes last year winning the Cricket Wellington T20 Final and beaten finalist in the Pearce Cup and I am sure under the leadership of Mark and with Sriram taking on the coaching role we can go one better this season.

Whether you are a serious or social player, I am sure you will have a great season on and off the field, enjoy, give your best and respect the game and the club.

My aim this year is to grow the non-playing support base and increasing the number of Taitanium members by creating a vibrant environment at the club where all supporters are down at the club for a couple of hours most Saturdays supporting the Premier team.

You may have also seen in the paper that the Station Village, our premier bar partner closed down last week. Graham and the team have been huge supporters of our club and it is very disappointing for them that they have had to close down.

It would be brilliant if all teams can come back to the clubrooms after the game to celebrate team and individual performances over the season.

The Taitanium Lunch
On Sunday as part of Taita Cricket's annual Taitanium lunch, the club recognised and celebrated the current and past premier players who have played 100 premier games for Taita.

To recognise the importance of this occasion the club invited Andy Leslie (former All Black captain) to talk about the importance of loyalty and comradeship.

Bad weather prevented cricket from being played and a chance for past Taita greats to watch the current premier team lead by Mark Houghton.

It was great for the current Premier team hear from the legends of the past and have them pass on their best wishes to the team for the upcoming Pearce Cup final to be played against Eastern Suburbs from Friday till Sunday of Easter weekend at the Basin Reserve.

TAITA DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB NEWSLETTER

5TH DECEMBER

Last week's outstanding performances

. Shaun Gillespie 5/28 Premier Reserve vs North City
. Phil Tunnicliffe 50* (including 5 sixes) vs North City
. Sam Le Gros 53* not out vs North City

Cricket update

The worm has turned two very good results from the Premier and Premier Reserves on Saturday have put both teams back in contention to make the top six at the end of the one day competition.

The Premiers put North City in to bat and dismissed them for 133, with Phil Tunnicliffe taking 4/28. In reply Taita chased down the target in 16.3 overs one down with Sam Le Gros 53* and Phil Tunnicliffe 50*

The Premiers are in 10th spot on 16 points but we have a game in hand, as we play the Wellington Under 19's at home on the 11th of January.

The Reserves batted first on a green slow track and stumbled to 143, with Cole O'Connor getting 35. In reply we bowled them out for 119 with Shaun Gillespie getting his first five wicket bag for the Reserves taking 5/28

The Grade 3 side are in a strong position against Wellington Indian Sports, after bowling them out for 126 we are 170/8 at stumps.

The shock result of the round was seeing the TDCC Legends going down for the first time this season. A bit of work to do Paul, for the huge local derby on Saturdayat home against the Squashies.

T20 vs Naenae (03/12/2014)

Great win in the T20 last night, after batting first we got off to a shaky start before Mark (32) and Nik Swain (23) put on 59 for the third wicket. A useful cameo from Tim Brown (20) saw us to 119/9 off our 20 overs.

In reply Naenae, never really got going at the start but a few late partnerships developed late in the innings. Mark and Hamish chipped in with 2 wickets each. We fielded really well and held our catches.

The match ended coming down to the last over where 10 runs were required. Step up Andrew Sturt, an outstanding last over as he only conceded only 2 runs! Good to see Andrew back steaming in.

Taita 119/9 (Mark Houghton 32)
Naenae 112/8 (Mark Houghton 2/20, Hamish Blomfield 2/12)

Cricket update
Not the start to the season that the Premier's and the Reserves were expecting. After Saturday's loss to University the Premiers are in 10th spot with two wins from five games, the team will be looking to strongly bounce back against Hutt Districts at Hutt Rec on Saturday.

The Premier Reserves after a good first up win against Naenae have stumbled in their last four games, like the Premiers the team is looking to bounce back against Hutt Districts at Fraser Park on Saturday.

The clubs only undefeated team the "Mighty Legends" under the stewardship of one Paul McNelis is looking to make it four from four when they take on Northern Park at Fraser 3 on Saturday.

Fraser One
You might be wondering why the Premiers have only had one home game so far this season. This is due to the issues we had with our number one cricket wicket last season, the council agreed to renovate our wicket prior to the start of the season. For reasons unknown this work started very late and as we speak the wicket is still at least three weeks away from being ready.

This situation is most unsatisfactory; however the club is working very hard with Cricket Wellington and the Council to resolve the issues.

At this stage the next Premier home game was set down for the 29th of November against North City, this game will be transferred to Linden Park. At earliest the Reserves will trial the upgraded block on the 6th of December.

The real disappointment here is that the Premier team is unlikely to play at home before xmas. We will keep you posted.

This Saturdays games

This year we have entered a team in the Girls College Youth Grade, the team consists of girls from Taita College and St Oran's and they played their first game last weekend, they had a close loss to Hutt Districts at Fraser Park in a T20. Best of luck girls, for the remainder of the season
